Kil'jaeden is the last boss inside Sunwell Plateau. His bark is definitely as bad as his bite and requires a well-geared, coordinated raid to bring him down. There are 5 phases and with each one comes a greater challenge. During Phases 2 and 5, Kalecgos flies above throwing arcane bolts at Kil'jaeden.
Phase 1
At the start of Phase 1, three
Hands of the Deceiver will be channeling. They are linked, so you can't pull one at a time and it's advised you tank them apart from each other. They have a few basic abilities.
- Melee: Hits for 2k on plate.
- Shadow Bolt Volley: Inflicts around 1500 shadow damage to all targets within 30 yards and gives them a debuff that will increase shadow damage taken by 750. Try to stay at maxed range to avoid these.
- Soul Portal: A portal that will spawn Volatile Felfire Fiends. These little guys run at the raid and explode, doing a lot of damage. They have little HP and can be one-shot, however they will still explode.
- Shadow Infusion: Once the Hand hits 20% health he becomes immune to stun and silence effects. It's important to down them quickly at this point.
Phase 2
Kil'jaeden now joins the fight and starts out by knocking back everyone within the circle. It deals no damage. His abilities are ranged and cast on random targets.
- Soul Flay: Channeled spell that deals 3k Shadow damage a second and slows movement speed. Soul Flay is usually cast on the person with the highest threat so make sure you stay under whomever you assign to tank.
- Legion Lightning: 2 second cast. This spell has the same effect as chain lightning, except it deals shadow damage rather than nature. It will hit its initial target for around 3500 damage and then spread to 4 other players. The damage deminishes with each jump, but will drain 1500 mana from all those who take a hit. The range for both the initial blow and all jumps is 50 yards, so it's nearly impossible to avoid the chain damage, but you can resist it.
- Fire Bloom: Effects up to 5 random players causing them to take around 2k fire damage and spread to any targets within 10 yards. This lasts 20 seconds, so it can cause significant damage to many players. Stay at least 10 yards apart.
- Summon Shield Orb: These orbs cast shadow bolts at the raid. They only have 20k health, so kill them down quickly.
Before we move on to the next phase I'd like to talk about the Orbs of the Blue Dragonflight. Around 35 seconds into phases 3 and 4, Kalecgos will empower 1 of the 4 orbs in the room (during phase 5 all 4 will be empowered around 45 seconds in). By clicking on the orbs, it will turn you into a blue dragon with some special abilities. This will last approximitely 2 minutes.
- Blink: Teleports the caster 20 yards forward.
- Breath - Revitalize: Causes friendly targets within 13 yards to regenerate 2250 health and mana over 10 seconds. Has a 10 second cooldown.
- Breath - Haste: Increases the attack, casting and movement speed of friendly targets within 13 yards by 25% for 30 seconds. Grants immunity to movement reduction effects and has a 10 second cooldown.
- Shield of the Blue: Creates a shield around the caster and all friendly targets within 10 yards that reduces all damage taken and all damage caused by 95%. This causes the dragon to lose 10% of his health per second and stuns. Lasts for 5 seconds and has a 20 second cooldown. Be sure to time your use of the Shield wisely as you can only use it twice before the dragon dies.
Phase 3
Once Kil'jaeden is down to 85%, Phase 3 will start. He has 5 abilities that he uses.
- Sinister Reflection: This spell is used at the start of phase 3. What it does is creates a reflection of the targeted raid member and uses the abilities tied to that class. Regardless of which class is reflected, they will deal around 2k damage with melee along with their casting or healing abilities. You can't crowd control them, but tanks can taunt them.
- Flame Dart Explosion: This spell is cast every 3 seconds and is instant. It deals around 1600 fire damage and will spread to other raid members causing 500 damage and give a 50% movement speed reduction debuff. Using Breathe - Haste will help here.
- Summon Shield Orb: This will now spawn 2 shield orbs.
- Darkness of a Thousand Souls: You must use the Shield of the Blue ability here! Kil'jaeden will do an emote that says "Kil'jaeden begins to channel dark energy" and will surround himself with wings. 8 seconds later he throws out around 50k shadow damage to the entire raid. This ability is on a 45 second cooldown and is not resisitable. If you don't use the shield, your raid will surely wipe.
After his round of shadow spikes, Kalecgos will empower one of the orbs allowing the use of the dragon abilities. Make sure you get him down to 55% before he does Darkness of a Thousand Souls for the third time or you will wipe as the dragon will be dead.
Phase 4
This phase begins at 55%. Again he will cast Sinister Reflection and another round of Shadow Spikes. Once again after these, Kalecgos will empower a orb. During this phase he will use all the same abilites, but gains a new one.
- Armageddon: A meteor that deals 10k damage to anyone under or near it. Watch for circles on the ground - these will indicate where they will drop. They take 8 seconds to reach the ground so you have some time to avoid them, but note that they will be consistently dropping throughout the phase. The only time they will stop is when he casts Darkness of a Thousand Souls.
- Summon Shield Orb: Summons 3 orbs now.
- Make sure you have Kil'jaeden down to 25% before the third Darkness of a Thousand Souls!
Phase 5
It's quite a feat to make it this far! At this point you have him down to 25% and are ready to finish him off. He will of course do another round of Sinister Reflection and cast his Shadow Spikes. At the end of the Shadow Spikes Kalecgos will sacrifice himself and give Kil'jaeden a debuff that causes him to take 25% more Holy damage. After the sacrifice he will be stunned for 5 seconds and all the dragon orbs will be active. Kil'jaeden will now use his Darkness of a Thousand Souls every 25 seconds. Since you can only use Shield of the Blue twice per dragon, you need to kill Kil'jaeden before his 8th Darkness of a Thousand Souls. 5 Armageddons will be dropping at all times in addition to this.
Congratulations on his defeat and watch his awesome cut-scene!
